RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of individualized nutrition training for mothers of children who underwent congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery on their children's growth and development. METHODS: The researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial at Çukurova University Medical Faculty Balcali Hospital in Adana, Turkey, between January 20th, 2021, and June 30th, 2021. They recruited 42 children with CHD and their families. Researchers used a personal information form, growth parameter measurements, and the Ankara Developmental Screening Inventory to assess the children. Participants were randomly divided into three groups. Control group, received standard care. Experimental group 1 (orally fed), received family-centered care and individualized nutrition training focused on age-appropriate food content, preparation methods, and meeting children's caloric needs. Experimental group 2 (orally and nutritionally fed), received the same interventions as group 1. The training programs for the experimental groups included information on strengthening breast milk and additional nutritional nutrition support. The training programs for the experimental groups likely addressed feeding challenges specific to children with CHD. RESULTS: The study found a statistically significant difference in weight gain between the first and third follow-ups within the training group (children who received individualized nutrition education). This suggests that the training may have positively impacted weight gain. Additionally, the children in the training groups who were breastfed for longer than 12 months had better growth parameters and developmental scores compared to those with shorter breastfeeding durations. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that individualized nutrition training for mothers of children with CHD surgery may support their children's growth and development, particularly when combined with prolonged breastfeeding.

RESUMO

Enteral-feeding refers to any nutritional method throughout the gastrointestinal tract, including oral feeding. This qualitative study examined the information, experiences, and records of neonatal nurses of enterally fed patients. The study was conducted between 05.04.2018 and 05.05.2018 with 22 nurses (73.3%) working in the neonatal intensive care clinic of Çukurova University Balcali Hospital, Adana, Turkey. The data were collected by "Observation and Interview Form" developed based on the literature. Nurses were observed, and interviews were conducted depending on their appointments. Data were collected by observing each nurse on 2 different days. In all observations; it was determined that the nurses changed the feeding set daily, regularly checked the location of the feeding tube and amount of residue, and administered medication through the feeding tube. In 22.7% of the observations, nurses did not securely fix the feeding tube, 27.2% did not write a daily date on the injector with the residual volume measured, and 31.8% did not wash the injector. All the nurses recorded the amount of feed, residual amounts, and content. At the end of the interviews, 9% of the nurses stated that they had experienced aspiration among the complications encountered during enteral feeding. During the interview, they stated that all nurses were educated about enteral nutrition, had control of whether the probe was in place before feeding, performed residual control, washed their hands before the procedure, fixed the food injector to 1 place, and allowed the food injector to flow spontaneously with negative pressure. According to the results of the interviews and observations, nurses could not reflect on their nursing practices correctly. Nurses working in neonatal intensive care units should be regularly trained to share the results of evidence-based studies on enteral nutrition.

RESUMO

Self-realization involves the realization of one's aims, revealing his/her potential, self-satisfaction, personal accomplishment, and scientific inventions. It is important to know nurses' self-realization levels and the variables that affect it, because self-fulfillment is necessary for the personal and professional development of nurses. This study was conducted to determine the relation between self-realization and burnout levels of nurses. The study is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on 136 nurses who worked at Çukurova University, Faculty of Medicine Hospital in Adana, Turkey. The data were collected with the Personal Information Form and the "Self-realization" sub-dimension of the "Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale" and the "Maslach Burnout Scale." The analyses of the data were made in the SPSS demo packet Program with percentages, averages, variance analysis, Student t test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The Ethical Board Approval and Institutional Approval were obtained for the study. The self-realization score average of the nurses was 32.93 ± 6.43. The self-realization scores of the nurses who preferred their jobs willingly were found to be higher, and their burnout levels were found to be lower. It was also determined that female nurses experienced more emotional burnout compared to male nurses. In the present study, it was determined that the personal accomplishment score averages were higher and the desensitization and emotional burnout score averages, which are among the burnout scale sub-dimensions, were lower in those who had higher self-realization scores.

RESUMO

The lack of knowledge on health literacy affects all segments of society, particularly health workers. The objectives were to identify nursing students' means of accessing information during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, their level of health literacy, and the factors that affect it. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey among 398 nursing students of Çukurova University and Van Yüzüncü Yil University between June 1 and June 30, 2020. As a data collection tool, E-Health Literacy Scale was used, with students' characteristics and personal information form related to Internet use. These forms were converted to the online format. The survey link was sent to the students' smartphones and/or e-mails to ask them to participate. Majority of participants were Van Yüzüncü Yil University nursing students (63.8%). E-SYO score average of all students was found to be 29.42 ± 4.39 (min = 14, max = 40); it was is found be at a good level. They used the Internet as the first source of information about coronavirus disease 2019 (65.1%).Among the participants, 65.8% stated that it was important to access the health resource on the Internet and 19.1% of the participants thought that it was very important. It was found that Internet use was being used for >3 times a day (72.9%). The age, class, gender, family type, income level, high school from which they graduated from, and their working status significantly were statistically affecting their health literacy (P < .05). The health literacy scale scores were significant and higher than those who did not know the concept of health literacy, and those who perceived Internet skills well and very well than those who perceived them poorly (P < .05). Nursing students were found to have good average health literacy averages. Improving the health literacy is important for making individuals healthier.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge level of nurses and midwives about the level of knowledge about neonatal resuscitation and the effect of education on knowledge levels. METHODS: The research was applied in January 2016 to the nurses and midwives who worked in neonatal intensive care units, gynecology and maternity wards at Cukurova University Balcali Hospital, Adana Numune Training and Research Hospital, Adana Maternity and Children Diseases Hospital, and had received Neonatal Resuscitation Program practitioner training course. All of the target populations were included in the research before the sample was determined. Data were collected using a questionnaire form consisting of 40 questions including sociodemographic information and knowledge level related to NRP. RESULTS: It was determined that the nurses and midwives answered the questions correctly related to oxygen usage (98.1%) and all the things that should be conducted in order to prevent heat loss in baby (98.1%). It was determined that NRP knowledge points of nurse/midwives were intermediate level as 23.06 ± 3.47 (min: 12; max: 30) and most of the participants (37%) had got NRP course in the last 4-5 years. There was a statistically significant difference between participating time to NRP practitioner training course and working years (p < 0.05). IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Systematic repetition of knowledge and skills through in-service training programs is important, as it will lead to a reduction of mortalities of newborns. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH: It was observed that the knowledge points were quite good considering that the participants of the NRP practitioner-training course had taken the course in the last 4-5 years.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: In painful operations like invasive procedures, it is aimed to analyze the effect of making the new-born listen to white noise CD by using the NIPS pain scale. METHODS: This is a randomized control trial of research made on 60 new-borns, ranging from 0-28 day-old, 28 gestational weeks and over, and coming to the intensive care unit in Gaziantep Cengiz Gokcek Maternity and Children Hospital in Turkey. New-borns in the experimental group on invasive procedures were exposed to white noise CD. New-borns were recorded while they were listening to white noise during an invasive procedure. Then, the NIPS pain scale on the questionnaire form and efficiency of white noise have been evaluated by comparing the new-borns' duration of crying. RESULTS: New-borns' duration of crying has been found statistically significant in the Independent Samples T-test (p < .05) which was performed between two independent groups with a 95% confidence interval. Duration of crying in the group being exposed to white noise (18.20 sec) has been determined lower than that of the control group (44.96 sec). CONCLUSION: In the end, the use of white noise CD on new-born during the invasive procedure has been determined to be applicable.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate whether serum apelin could reflect the nutritional status of children on dialysis. METHODS: Twelve patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 20 patients on hemodialysis (HD) were enrolled. Patients received individualized diet for six months. Anthropometric and laboratory indices were measured at onset and the end of the study. RESULTS: The anthropometric indices were all significantly lower in patients than in controls whereas similar in PD and HD patients. The protein catabolic rate (nPCR), height, mid-arm circumference (MAC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), arm muscle area (AMA) and arm fat area (AFA) z scores were significantly increased in dialysis patients after nutritional intervention. Weight z scores statistically increased in HD group whereas did not statistically change in PD group. Serum albumin levels were significantly improved in PD and HD patients. Apelin levels were similar in PD, HD and control groups. Post nutritional apelin values did not differ in each dialysis groups. On multivariate analysis, apelin was independently associated with age, weight, ESR and TG. CONCLUSIONS: Apelin seems to be not a useful indicator for monitoring the nutritional status in children on dialysis. However, the close link of apelin with inflammatory and lipid parameters suggested that apelin might be a novel target for slowing the atherogenic process in pediatric dialysis patients.

RESUMO

The aim of our cross-sectional study was to investigate the factors that affected Hepatitis-B Vaccination (HBV) knowledge of the nurses and midwives, serving at various medical facilities as part of the primary healthcare services in Konya, Turkey. The study was conducted during March 01-31, 2004, including 127 consentient nurses and midwives (out of 161) serving at 22 different healthcare centers in the region. In the survey, their source of information with regards to HBV vaccination varied from continuing education programs (37%) to book or brochure reading (11.8%), and their formal nursing education (11%). A statistically significant relationship was found between the number of years employed in this profession and knowledge of Hepatitis markers that are done prior to the beginning of vaccination calendar (p = 0.01) (p < 0.05). Majority (74.8%) of the participants reported that they gave information to families about potential side effects of HBV vaccination. In conclusion we have suggested that a special training program should be given to nurses and midwives that included topics like Hepatitis markers, vaccine administration techniques, doses, proper record taking, briefing individuals and families.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the function of newborn nurses given at newborn feeding in the newborn units of public hospitals in Konya, Turkey, besides it was also to determine the effect of nurses which had short-term training, aka education, in practice and in theory. METHODS: This was an experimental study conducted with a total of 50 newborn nurses between 15 September 2004 and 30 February 2005. In collecting the data, a survey sheet including the demographic characteristics of newborn nurses and their knowledge on newborn feeding was applied, along with another remark form that shows clinical practices about newborn feeding. RESULTS: Considering the nurses, their knowledge mean score 'after education (AE)' was calculated to be 72.4 ± 10.4, which was significantly higher than that of 'before education (BE)', which was 58.0 ± 9.3, (p < 0.05). Likewise, the implementation mean score of these nurses AE (57.2 ± 4.9) was also found higher than the mean score BE (54.4 ± 5.0) (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the posteducation mean scores of nurses for the number of children they had, and for the hospital they work. CONCLUSION: In this study, it was determined that the nurses had knowledge deficits about newborn feeding both in theory and practice, but after a short educational program on newborn feeding their theoretical and practical knowledge had shown increases.
